I witnessed an incredible act of love and support while walking on the beach the other day. About 20 yards ahead of me, a father and his 8 year old daughter, who were both wearing wetsuits, walked hand in hand towards the ocean followed by a parade of 20 people holding cameras and video recorders. Everyone looked on and cheered as this father/daughter couple slowly waded into the water, never unlocking hands. As I watched this event unfold, I became very teary eyed and choked up.
What struck me the most wasn’t the lovingness of their joined hands or their locked faces as they entered the water, but rather the parade of friends and family that took place before that moment.
If you’ve ever seen the movie Love Actually and know the scene where the village folks follow behind Colin Firth as he makes his way through the streets of a small European village to go propose to his love interest, then you know what I mean - this event had that level of intensity and excitement.
As I watched the small crowd look on and cheer, it got me thinking about how love and support plays such an important part of our lives. How overcoming our fears or trying out something new can seem so much easier when we have a net of love wrapped around us. And more importantly, what impact our own presence can have on someone else when we show up at pivotal moments in their lives. Who are you showing up for these days?
